Favorite family holiday tradition:

Just a few years ago my parents introduced a new tradition to our christmas routine which quickly became one of my favorites. A pickle ornament is hidden in the tree on christmas morning and whoever is the first to find it opens the first present. I most likely enjoy this tradition because i am the raining pickle champion of the family, having found the pickle 3 out of 4 years running. One year, after yet another victory for yours truly, my brother was visibly distraught, what better way to kick off the holiday!

Favorite meal at Luce:

I am currently enjoying two perfect meals at Luce:

For lunch, while the light comes in through the big windows I crave a half romaine salad and a half spaghetti with garlic, hot peppers and clams and to drink I am loving the Magdalena.

For dinner I want the hanger steak with a double side of braised cabbage and a glass of the Etna Rosso.

Favorite Family Holiday tradition:

Christmas is a pretty quiet time for my family these days, no little ones to fuss over. The family always congregates at my mom's house in Santa Cruz, CA, and a high point is always the walk down to the beach on Christmas day.

Shopping for presents in Portland is a dangerous thing.

I have a mantra: "tis the season to give",

but no matter how hard I try, I forget sometimes...

Come join us for a pre-IPNC dinner at Luce on July 22. Once a year, The International Pinot Noir Celebration brings winemakers and wine-enthusiasts from all over the world to the Willamette Valley. It’s an opportunity to eat, drink, gather and learn about wine. In this spirit, and as a way to get in the swing of things before the event, Maggie Harrison of Antica Terra and John Taboda from Navarre are hosting a pre-IPNC dinner with Hannes Reinisch from the Thermenregion in Austria (Just south of Vienna).

The dinner is being held at John and Giovanna's new event space Luce, where he will prepare a six course meal to accompany the wines. Maggie will be pouring the Antica Terra and Botanica Pinot Noirs from the 2008 vintage, while Weingut Johanneshof Reinisch will offer wines from three of the varietals grown on their Thermenregion estate: Rotgipfler, St. Laurent, and Pinot Noir.

The event will be a fantastic opportunity to meet the two winemakers, taste lovely Pinot Noir from dramatically different regions, and experience the unusual grape varietals of the Thermenregion.

Ashley Helvey has collaborated with LUCE, design studio IACOLI AND MCALLISTER, and musician Honey Owens of VALET to create an installation and experience based on the Buddhist concept of the Clear Light Mind. Following the opening she will teach a felting workshop at Luce where you can learn the basic techniques used to transform raw wool into a felt textile. Read more on the UNA site.

Ashley Helvey is a felt artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries nationally and in Europe. She contributed to the Cooper Hewitt International Design Museum's Fashioning Felt exhibit and worked with the cooperative Le Famn Veret in Haiti, to develop a line of felted objects to provide jobs for local women. Helvey teaches workshops at institutions, museums, and galleries and continues to collaborate with artist and designers on felted installations and performance pieces....

Honey Owens has been an important figure in the Portland experimental music scene for more than 10 years and has collaborated with an array of both obscure and well-known music projects including World, Nudge, Dark Yoga, Jackie-O Motherfucker and currently The Miracles Club. For the past couple years, Valet has turned into a collaboration with visual artist Ashby Collinson and the new project is now called 'Valley' -this will be their first show as the new entity.
